Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

Welcome to Year 6, the final chapter of primary school. Year 6 is a very exciting time where you can flourish and lay the foundations to a really strong and promising education: a year of exciting opportunities, rewarding experiences and challenge!

This is your year to shine. As well as reaching our potential academically, there will be plenty of opportunities to participate in key roles and responsibilities within the school that will equip you for your transition to secondary school. In Year 6 you will be expected to work hard but in return, you will be rewarded with many happy memories, lasting friendships, and an increased confidence and independence to take you onto your next adventure.

Reading

Reading continues to be important in Year 6 and beyond. Please continue to hear your child read aloud regularly.  In addition, children will benefit from being asked a range of questions about what they have been read, to ensure that they have understood it. 5 reads a week are still expected.

Homework

Each week, homework is set and due in on a Tuesday. It will normally be expected that children complete:

  • 10-20 mins per week of Times Tables Rock Stars
  • 5 reads per week
  • 20-30 minutes of English
  • 20-30 minutes of maths

This will be a variety of worksheets, online activities and independent working on individual targets.
Marking will be a mixture of online, peer marking and teacher/TA as appropriate.

Spelling and Tables

Times tables can best be practiced through the Times Tables Rock Stars online game, for which all children have logins - https://ttrockstars.com/login. Spellings or spelling rules are set weekly and tested weekly.  Children are expected to get at least 7 out of 10 on their weekly spelling test to ensure that these are securely learnt.

Life experiences

Year 6 is an important time to prepare children for the wider world of high school. You can support this transition by giving your child increasing independence when they are ready for it, such as walking to school on their own or with friends, managing their money and so on. An essential part of this is managing their own social media use sensibly and this will need to be monitored by parents/carers.

PE

In Year 6 we have a range of activities including: football, tag rugby, netball, gymnastics, dance, cross country and athletics.

School PE kit is required - including house-coloured t-shirt.

Football shirts are not part of the uniform and should not be brought in as part of the kit.
